Frankfurt Skyliners Back in BBL
Frankfurt’s Fraport Skyliners return to the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) after just a year away. Coach Denis Wucherer’s team celebrated its sporting rise by beating Römerstrom Gladiators Trier 85:76 (51:31) in the 2nd division (ProA) play-off semi-final on Sunday.
Since only Frankfurt and Trier have BBL licences, the result of the final series against PS Karlsruhe Lions is no longer important. Karlsruhe had failed to apply for a BBL license. For this reason, the decision to promote sports was taken between Trier and Frankfurt.
After four games of the five-game series, the score was 2:2. The Skyliners dominated the game, especially before halftime, with impressive performances from their top scorers Aiden Warnholtz (25) and Booker Coplin (23). However, the Trier team, built around former national player Maik Zirbes (9), was disappointed.
With Frankfurt Skyliners being the only team promoted to the BBL, it is likely that the wildcard procedure will be implemented again in the league. In this case, the relegated Tigers Tübingen and Hakro Merlins Crailsheim can apply. According to SWR, Tübingen is not interested in this procedure.
