1- What advice do you give to international sports lawyers? What should be done to increase Turkish sports law’s involvement in the international arena?
We have very valuable lawyers working on Sports Law. These have important counterparts in the world. These lawyers work in many international professional organizations. There are 4 Turkish Lawyers working in CAS today, which I could not be with due to the July 3 conspiracy. Hopefully these numbers will increase exponentially in the coming years. The field of Sports Law is actually a very competitive field. I recommend our colleagues who want to enter this field to get their education in the kitchen by working in sports clubs and sports federations. Again, our colleagues who will enter this field must have a very good level of foreign language knowledge and be able to write and speak at least one or even two foreign languages at an advanced level.
2-If the sad events had not happened in the so-called match-fixing case, you would have been the 3rd referee in CAS. We know that you had a major role in the preparation of Law No. 6222. What would you like to share with us about this situation? What policies and collaborations should be introduced to prevent match-fixing and incentive bonus incidents in the international sports world?
CAS arbitration is not easy to obtain. I have expertise in football. In order to become a CAS referee candidate, you need to have experience in this field, write articles and more. You need to follow cases in CAS, follow cases in national judicial bodies, and participate in international symposiums and conferences. The National Olympic Committee notifies CAS as a CAS referee candidate. Then, a positive opinion about you must be received from the national federation and the continental confederation to which the federation is affiliated. As a result, CAS decides whether you will be an arbitrator, taking into account the country quota. You are included in the CAS list in accordance with your expertise. Training is provided by CAS. After this, you can start the task. After an extremely long, meticulous and difficult process, you are selected by the parties to the case. You can remain on the list as long as you meet a certain number and receive a positive rating in the evaluation of your files. Unfortunately, as a result of the conspiracy I was exposed to at the last point of this process, I lost my right to take on this position. My goal is to ensure that new CAS referees are included in the list with my contribution and support. For this reason, I help train new sports lawyers with financial and moral support. If even one of them gets on the CAS list, I will be as happy as if I were included myself.
