Wiffen to Swim 10km Open Water at the Olympics
Twice world champion Daniel Wiffen is set to compete in the 10km open water race, in addition to the 1500m and 800m freestyle events, at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Wiffen is one of the 12 swimmers confirmed to represent Ireland at the Olympics. In February, he won gold in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle at the Doha event, securing his spot to compete in two pool events in Paris.
The 22-year-old aims to make history as Ireland’s first Olympic athlete in the 10km open water marathon, which will take place in the Seine River during the second week of the Games.
Larne swimmer Danielle Hill will compete in the women’s 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle events.
Mona McSharry will swim in the women’s 100m and 200m breaststroke, while Ellen Walshe will take part in the women’s 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley, and 400m individual medley.
Belfast’s Victoria Catterson and 16-year-old Bangor swimmer Grace Davison will join Erin Riordan and Hill in the women’s 4x100m medley relay team.
One of the mixed relay swimmers will join Hill, McSharry, and Walshe in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Belfast’s Conor Ferguson will swim in the men’s relay alongside Shane Ryan, Darragh Greene, and Max McCusker.
Ryan will make history as the first Irish male swimmer to compete in three Olympics.
Tom Fannon will compete in the men’s 50m freestyle.
The Irish diving team includes Jake Passmore in the men’s 3m springboard and Ciara McGing in the women’s 10m platform.
