Kaufmann Replaces Han in Paris
Following the injury-related withdrawal of Germany’s top table tennis player Ying Han, 18-year-old Annett Kaufmann will now travel to Paris for the Olympics.
The German champion and Olympic debutant from SV DJK Kolbermoor has been nominated by the German Table Tennis Federation for the Summer Games from July 26 to August 11. Kaufmann, initially registered as a reserve player, will now join the team alongside world No. 16 Nina Mittelham and European Championship bronze medalist Xiaona Shan, who will now compete in the singles competition in place of Han. Yuan Wan from TTC Weinheim will travel to the French capital as a reserve player.
Han (41) re-tore her Achilles tendon last Friday during an international tournament in Bangkok, marking her second rupture within six months. After making a comeback just 176 days following the initial rupture of her right Achilles tendon at a tournament in Doha, this time it was the tendon in her left foot. According to the association, she is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday. Han, who won silver with the team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, is considered the world’s best defensive player.
