Gummersbach Strengthens Defense with Gomes

Gummersbach Signs Joao Gomes

Handball Bundesliga side VfL Gummersbach has strengthened its defense by signing promising Portuguese talent Joao Gomes from Sporting CP.

The 22-year-old joins from the Lisbon-based club and has signed a contract with Gummersbach until 2028. The club officially announced the transfer on Wednesday.

“Joao is a very exciting young player who impresses primarily with his speed. He can also play as a central defender, which makes him a versatile asset for us,” said VfL General Manager Christoph Schindler. “Despite his young age, he has already gained significant international experience.”

With Sporting, Gomes won three national championships over the past two seasons and reached the EHF Champions League quarterfinals this year. In addition, he made headlines in January by helping Portugal reach the semifinals of the World Championship, eliminating Germany in the quarterfinals.
