Paris Waste Collectors on Strike Before Olympics

Waste collectors in Paris went on strike on Tuesday, two and a half months before the French capital hosts the Summer Olympic Games. Paris city hall said 16 percent of staff were on strike. The CGT union branch claimed that 70-90 percent of staff were on strike, depending on the “area” of the capital.

It was warned that the strikes would take place for a few days in May and then continue from 1 July to 8 September. The Summer Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.

The Paris region is demanding additional wages and bonuses for workers during the Olympics. However, the mayor’s office had previously rejected these requests.

In March last year, a three-week strike by waste collectors against pension reform resulted in a massive accumulation of waste on the streets of Paris.
