Turkmenistan’s Sole Participant: Mayagözel Ekeyeva to Compete at Paris Paralympic Games
Mayagözel Ekeyeva, representing Turkmenistan, will compete at the 17th Summer Paralympic Games in Paris. The seasoned 38-year-old athlete is set to participate in the 86 kg category of the parapowerlifting event on September 8.
Ekeyeva is an internationally experienced Paralympic athlete. In the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games, she lifted 105 kg in the 73 kg category, finishing in fifth place. This time, she will compete in a heavier weight category, with her personal best being 115 kg.
According to the Turkmenistan delegation head Tahir Shorahanov, Ekeyeva is in excellent form and highly motivated to achieve top results. Her primary goal at the Paralympic Games is to finish in the top five, with the ultimate aim of winning a medal.
Ekeyeva has won bronze medals at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Para Games. She secured a direct qualification for the Paris Paralympic Games by finishing fifth at the 2023 World Championships held in Dubai.
The Paris Paralympic Games will feature approximately 4,400 athletes from around 180 countries, competing in 22 sports for 549 medals. Ekeyeva’s coach, Sergey Meladze, has previously coached three Olympic participants.
