Turkmen Judoka Serdar Rahimov’s Olympic Journey

Murat Gurbanov, the proprietor of the Sport Portal brand established in Turkmenistan, shared exclusive insights with Sports Declaration about the rising star of Turkmen judo, Serdar Rahimov.

“20-year-old Serdar Rahimov began his judo journey under the guidance of his first coach, Bayram Şerepov, in the Hojambaz district of the Lebap province. He is currently training with the Turkmen national team under the supervision of Japanese expert and 7th dan Kodokan judo champion Kazuhiko Tokuno. Rahimov is also a third-year student at the Turkmen State Institute of Architecture.

Competing in the Olympic Games for the first time, Serdar Rahimov made an impressive debut by defeating Edmilson Pedro of Angola 10-1 in the first round. Pedro received three warnings during the match. However, in the round of 16, Rahimov faced Brazilian judoka Willian Lima and received three penalties, ending his Olympic campaign. The first penalty (shido) was for his opponent’s withdrawal, while the second and third were for passivity, as determined by the referee.

Rahimov’s recent achievements include:

  • May 10, 2024: Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam 2024, 7th place
  • May 3, 2024: Dushanbe Grand Slam 2024, 1st place
  • March 16, 2024: Riga Senior European Cup 2024, 2nd place
  • March 8, 2024: Grand Prix Upper Austria 2024, 7th place

As one of Turkmenistan’s promising athletes, Serdar Rahimov continues to represent our country on the international stage,” Gurbanov concluded.
